Spatial Awareness Biases

چکیده

Pilot performance models used for representing task demands with new display technology, such as Synthetic Vision Systems, should benefit from a module associated with spatial awareness. Such a module represents how the pilot understands his/her position and trajectory in the 4D space (X, Y, Z and time), with regard to the desired flight path and waypoints, and with regard to terrain, traffic and weather hazards. This paper reviews and integrates the biases that have been documented through research in how the pilot's representation is influenced by features of the display of visual-spatial information. These biases can then be incorporated into such a model.

Spatial Awareness Biases in Synthetic Vision Systems Displays

Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) create a synthetic clear-day view of the terrain in front of ownship to prevent controlled flight into terrain. To investigate how spatial biases manifest themselves in SVS displays, an experiment was conducted. Eighteen pilots made spatial judgments (relative angle, distance, height, and abeam time) regarding the location of terrain points displayed in 112 5-seco...

Using Relative Position and Temporal Judgments to Identify Biases in Spatial Awareness for Synthetic Vision Systems

Synthetic vision systems (SVS) are cockpit displays that depict terrain ahead of ownship to prevent controlled flight into terrain. This work investigated how spatial biases manifest themselves in SVS displays. Eighteen pilots made spatial judgments (relative angle, distance, height, and abeam time) regarding the location of terrain points displayed in 112 5-sec videos of SVS displays. Judgment...

The orienting of spatial attention to backward masked fearful faces is associated with variation in the serotonin transporter gene.

Threat signals facilitate spatial attention, even when awareness of these signals has been restricted through the use of backward masking. However, unrestricted/unmasked threat cues tend to delay the disengagement of attention, whereas restricted/masked threat facilitates orienting, suggesting different underlying mechanisms. Within the general population, the serotonin transporter gene polymor...

تأثیر تغییرات مکانی بارندگی بر پیش‌بینی هیدروگراف سیلاب در حوضه‌های آبریز کوهستانی

In this study, the influence of spatial heterogeneity of rainfall on flood hydrograph prediction in three mountainous catchments in south west of Iran was studied. Two interpolation techniques including Thiessen polygons method and Inverse Distance Weighting method were applied to compare the rainfall patterns of surrounding rain-gages in hydrograph simulation with rainfall patterns of nearest ...

Revisiting unilateral neglect.

Unilateral neglect, a neurological disorder in which patients fail to detect or respond to contralesional stimuli, has long been considered a failure of attentional orienting mechanisms. This review provides a selective overview of the prominent biases in spatial orienting and exploratory motor behaviour observed in these patients before considering the impact of other factors on the presentati...
